Our Projects

Afforestation

With the Collaboration SIPCOT and HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA FOUNDATION, CSD Cuddalore actively processing the afforestation at Irungattukottai SIPCOT - Chennai. Nearly 5,000 plant saplings are in healthy condition and it is maintained clearly through proper channel. CSD officials are doing their effective work to maintain these plants out of many barriers. The native and indigenous species of plants is developed to protect the species from being endangered.

Non-Sewered Sanitation

With millions of people across the country unable to access basic sanitation facilities, Non-sewered sanitation or Ecological Sanitation (Eco-San) is an environment friendly sustainable sanitation system which regards human waste as resource for agricultural purposes and food security. Eco-San toilets have emerged as a sustainable concept to fix the sanitation problem in India. Eco-San seeks to close the loop of nutrients cycle, conserve water and our surrounding environment. Since 2009, the CSD is promoting Eco-San toilets in Cuddalore region with support of Sanitation First India and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Cuddalore.

Individual Household Eco-San Toilets

The CSD is the first organization which promoted ecological sanitation (Eco-San) Cuddalore district. So far we have constructed around 650 Eco-San Individual Household Toilets (IHHL), with support of Sanitation First UK/India and DRDA Cuddalore. These toilets enable households to practice safe sanitation in the comfort of their own houses and also retrieve the compost as a rich soil fertilizer for their crops, flowering plants and kitchen gardens. The CSD is regularly monitoring the toilets and recorded 92 % of usage. It’s also providing frequent awareness on water, sanitation and menstrual hygiene to the beneficiaries.

School Sanitation Blocks

Our organization firmly believes that the children have a right to basic facilities such as school toilets, safe drinking water, clean surroundings and basic knowledge on hygiene practices. This year, we have constructed 13 school sanitary complexes in Cuddalore and Chennai region though with support of Wherever the Need India Services (WTNIS), Pondicherry. More than 8,500 students getting benefit by out of school sanitation initiatives.

Hygiene Education

CSD organized 170 School Sanitation and Hygiene Education programme in 35 schools and more than 10,500 students were actively participated and improved their knowledge on sanitation and hygiene. The school training program will have pre and post assessment, when compare to the pre assessment, the post assessment scores showed a significant improvement (36.2%) in the post assessment on various behaviour change practices including hand-washing, menstrual hygiene and food hygiene etc., CSD had distributed portable water filter units with support of Kynarou to 6 primary schools in Theni district. The water filter provides purified safe water for more than 250 students in project schools.

DEWATS – BIOGAS Toilet Complex

Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) convey, treat and dispose or reuse wastewater from small communities, buildings and dwellings in remote areas, individual public or private properties. With support of Kynarou, a France based organization; CSD had constructed six units of DEWATS toilet complexes with Bio-gas digester in six villages, Theni District. The system reducing the ecological footprint of the community through reducing the level of pollution discharged to water bodies. Moreover, it provides safe sanitation with minimal water use for more than 8,500 beneficiaries in 6 villages.

Providing Hand Wash Facility

Safe and healthy hygiene habits are essential for all ages, but they are especially important for young children. With support of Sanitation First, CSD was installed a Hand hygiene device in Govt. Hr.Sec. School, Erumbur. The device is providing an accurate dose of soap & water and it saves up to 95% on water consumption and 60% of soap usage.

Inner-City Sanitation (ICS) Project

With support of Sanitation First India (SFI), the CSD is promoting sanitation services for slum residents in Cuddalore since 2010. As part of this program, CSD has placed 20 Semi Permanent Eco-San Toilets in Cuddalore Slums and another 15 Eco-San units have been placed in the Sri Lankan refugee’s camps in Kullanchavadi and Kurinchipadi with support of Lebara Foundation, Chennai. These 35 units are serving around 3,000 people in the project areas. The transformation is truly inspiring, people feel better, have more dignity and confidence and are better off financially.

Solid Waste Management

The complete lack of waste management in rural areas has resulted large amount of trash, predominantly plastic, piling up all along roadside and vacant lands. CSD with support of Kynarou, initiated proper waste management services in Marikundu panchayat which covers 6 hamlets. The Solid Waste Management (SWM) activities is include household collection, segregation, composting, safe disposal of wastes and providing community awareness on waste management with the participation local Panchayat. Waste management committees were formed and periodically trained in order to promote waste management awareness and household level segregation practices in the project areas. The project has created many positive impacts, the quantities of solid wastes increased by 30% and 90% uncontrolled waste disposal reduced in the project areas, due to regular collection and motivation.

Community Water Filters Units

A large proportion people depend on the river water for drinking purpose in Theni district, which has different type of contaminations. With support of Kynarou NGO, CSD was installed bio-sand water filter (BSF) in selected 6 villages. The BSF consists of a plastic container filled with specially selected and prepared sand and gravel. As water flows through the filter, physical straining removes pathogens, iron, turbidity and manganese from drinking water. As of now, 12 BSF units were installed in six villages, which are supplying safe drinking water for more than 12,000 people on daily basis. The post project assessment indicates, diarrhea, and other water borne disease were reduced up to 30 - 47% among all age groups in the project villages.

Relief and rehabilitation for the flood people in Cuddalore district

Cuddalore district has been experiencing disaster after disaster every year after the Tsunami of 2004. Now again due to the continuous downpour of rainfall at Cuddalore district starting from first week of November, 2015 to second week of December and large-scale flooding the damage caused to human and their belongings are innumerable. As part of recent flood Relief and rehabilitation program, CSD placed 15 ACP fabricated Semi-Permanent Eco-San Units in SriLankan Refugee camps at Kurinjipadi and Ambalavananpettai near Cuddalore supported by WTN Pondicherry. As part of the relief work, CSD also supported to rebuild Eco san 43 individual toilets and repaired 98 toilets in Mel Bhuvanagiri block.

Eco Sanitation Agricultural Research

CSD maintained mobile eco-san toilet. From there CSD gets fecal it all taken to the compost yard which was built in Kumudimoolai. CSD is collecting human urine from nearby schools, and eco san compost collecting from house. These are the major resource for cultivating the agriculture demo plot at Iyanthour for the third cultivation from May 2013, for long term duration (3 year). In 5 treatment plots and 5 replications 1 plot is equals to 1 cent total 25 cent (25 Demo plots). It was divided as 5 various categories they are as follows:

Plot no 1: RDI 100% (Recommendation Dosage Inputs)

Plot no 2: 50% Human Urine + 50% RDI

Plot no 3: 25% Human Urine + 75% RDI

Plot no 4: 100% Human Urine

Plot no 5: Control
